Manifesto

No scores for sale. No brewery pays for placement. If a beer is dull, we say it is dull.

Hop Press started in a Toronto kitchen fridge with too many forgotten IPAs and not enough honest notes. Check-in apps are for collecting. We are for drinking.

Everything here is bought at retail, opened at home, and written up the same week. No brewery sees a review before it is published, and no review is changed after the fact except to correct a factual error, which is then noted at the foot of the page.

We are three people with day jobs and a shared spreadsheet. That is the whole operation.

How We Rate

Every beer gets three scores: look, smell and taste, each out of ten. The overall is their mean, nothing more clever than that. A pretty beer that tastes flat will never reach a nine, and a plain-looking beer that tastes extraordinary will not be held back.

What We Don’t Do

  • No affiliate links. If we point at a bottle shop, it is because they have it cold.
  • No sponsored reviews and no brewery collaborations. Ever.
  • No score inflated for hype. Cloud is not quality.
If you need vanilla, lactose and a kilo of fruit purée to make your beer interesting, you did not brew an interesting beer. — Fris, Issue No. 001
